We’ve often written about the importance of preparing properly for any successful presentation.
VIDEO SPOILER ALERT: Please do not watch if you are easily offended by swear words.
What a difference a few days make! Earlier this week we showed you Julia Gillard's knitting PR stunt. Today (one change in PM later) this video has re surfaced of Australia's 28th Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd.
Rudd was once described as a "psychopath with a giant ego", however fellow Labour MP, Tony Abbott, says Rudd is "easily the best communicator, the best person to connect with the Australian public that exists in politics today."
Whatever your political views Rudd, like all of us, is still prone to stumbling over complex language and becoming irrationally angry when trying to deliver a scripted piece. As Rudd 'explains' during his expletive outbursts the key to great communication is simple, concise and easily understandable language. Something he obviously felt he wasn't given for this video.
We don't like scripts at Media First but sometimes we know its unavoidable. In these instances allow yourself some flexibility with it so the audience don't sense that its over scripted. It's also important that you have ownership of the messages and use language that feels natural to you. If you're uncomfortable with the language used or the way the sentences are constructed then you too could end up on YouTube just like Rudd in the above clip.
